A SHORT GUIDE TO DISCOVERING BERE FERRERS & OTHER BITS OF DEVON
Bere Ferrers is a small village that starts besides the River Tavy and meanders up the hill either side of Fore Street, passing the Olde Plough Inn, our village pub with it's restaurant. A little further along is the Lanterna, the village shop, and next door is the post office and newsagent. The river is tidal at this point and at high tide the river becomes it's most picturesque. On still mornings the sunrises over the river are spectacular. Just along the river is the village recreation field with slide, swings, bike track, zip wire, bird hide, barbecue and even a tennis and volley ball court for the energetic! If you prefer a walk to explore the area a path runs adjacent to the river leading down to Hallowell wood where it joins the road. You can then either chose to enter the wood or follow the road up Vinegar Hill heading towards Collytown. Eventually you will see a track leading down into Whittacliffe Wood. This will take you to the dam at Lopwell, where at low tide it is possible to cross the river. Once across you can head towards Blaxton Wood where a path runs alongside the river. Alternately you could follow the road up the hill to Milton Combe for refreshments at the local pub. To avoid becoming stranded on this side of the river you should know the tide times and keep an eye on the clock.
Should you prefer to do your exploring by car The Old Sunday School is surrounded by many fascinating places to visit. Here are just a few examples: We are eight miles from Tavistock, voted the Best Market Town in 2004. Only 5 miles away is Morwellham Quay, a renovated tin mine beside the river Tamar offering an interesting day out. Also close by is Buckland Abbey, once the home of Sir Francis Drake and now owned by the National Trust. There are several other local National Trust Properties nearby including The Garden House at Buckland Monachorum Just across the river Tamar is the Tudor Cotehele Manor House with its fabulous gardens which can be reached by car, train or during the summer, a ferry.
Nearby is the magical scenery of Dartmoor National Park, rich in prehistoric monuments, hidden mysteries and the famous Dartmoor ponies. Whether an experienced hill walker or a Sunday stroller, this wild landscape has something to offer everyone.
For those wishing to travel further a field, the delights of the Devon and Cornwall coasts are within reasonable driving distance. Heading north could bring you to Hartland point where on a clear day the island of Lundy will be visible. Alternately you may decide to head south and discover the South Cornish coast and fishing villages such as Polperro and Looe.
This short guide can only hint at the possibilities available to you during your visit. Our aim is to ensure that you have an enjoyable and comfortable stay at The Old School House. Please do not hesitate to contact us should you require any additional information. |
